Canon EOS R Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera With 30.3-Megapixel Sensor, 4K Video Recording has finally launched today. The announcement was made at an event held in Tokyo, Japan. The camera has a new RF mount, which means we also have a new series of lenses that are also launched.
Just after the launch of Nikon’s first mirrorless camera launch, Canon is here with it’s first mirrorless camera to stand beside Nikon for competition.
Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, Group Executive – ICB Products Group, Canon Inc. said “ “Being one of the global leaders in the imaging space, Canon has always kept innovation at the forefront, enabling technology to complement the art of photography. For over 30 years, the legendary EOS system has given photographers and filmmakers the benchmark for high-quality imagery,”
The new EOS R boasts full-frame CMOS sensor with Canon’s famed DualPixel autofocus (AF) technology and its DIGIC 8 image processor. The ISO range is amazing as well, ranging from 100-40,000, with 8fps continuous shooting and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000sec. The camera also supports 4K video recording up to 30fps, 1080p recording up to 60fps, and HD recording up to 120fps. Advanced shooting modes like Canon Log, 4:2:0 8-bit recoding and 4:2:2 10-bit video output over HDMI are also supported. The camera also has a silent shooting mode but only for single frame shooting. Silent shooting in burst mode will be coming in the future via a software update.
Canon also has a drawback as same as Nikon, There’s only Single SD card slot with UHS-II compatibility which is not preferred by most of the professionals.
The Canon EOS R features a new lens mount dubbed RF mount, which features a 54mm inner diameter and a flange-back distance of 20mm. That’s the same throat diameter as EF mount, but it’s some 24mm shorter in flange depth which should allow for better illumination in the corners and lenses with fewer elements. The 54mm diameter RF mount is what makes EOS R unique with its short back-focus of 20mm and 12-pin contact points for enhanced communication between the lens and body. EOS R does not offer in-body sensor-shift image stabilization, however electronic IS is available for video which can be combined with a lens’ optical image stabilization.
RF Lenses launched by Canon
- RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM
- RF 50mm f/1.2L USM
- RF 28-70mm f/2L USM
- RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
The Canon R has smaller body design than a traditional full-frame DSLR. Compared to a typical EOS DSLR, such as the 5D Mark IV, the EOS R is much more compact and lightweight, yet still provides a nice, large handgrip for a comfortable and secure hold. Canon EOS R has a more angular and “smooth” approach compared to the Sony A7 III or Nikon Z6 which makes the design of the camera even more amazing.
