Daily we hear the news that this city of India has declared as a smart city and it will be redeveloped and it makes us confused. What’s so special about this smart city? Will it be quite different from traditionally developed city? If no then why so much of fuss and if yes then how this smart city would be different to these traditionally established cities. What special facilities a resident of this smart city can enjoy. So let’s find out the very nuisance of these smart cities which will soon be developed.
First, let’s look at the basic problem of India. Today 40% of India’s population lives in cities. Cities are still not well equipped to handle such a large population. There is lack of infrastructures everywhere. People are not getting home to stay. We usually notice poor people, laborers and migrants are sleeping on the road. They won’t even get safe drinking water and food.
And day by day our population is rapidly growing. Every year we produce a small European country in terms of population. It’s not a joke, its truth.
Here, it is a daunting task for the government to provide basic facilities to all. Also, countless people are regularly migrating towards cities to get good a job, education and have a better lifestyle. According to a study, by 2050, around 70% of Indian will be living in cities. 70% literally!!!
Now think about the scenario. In current scenario, if that much influx of population will arrive, our cities will completely come to a halt. They are not equipped to handle such a large population. There will be crisis in almost all sectors. People won’t get proper home to stay. Most of the population will end up spending the night on road/ in parks.
It would also be almost impossible for the government to handle such a large volume of the population. And at the same time it is the responsibility of the government to take care of these people. So how government will tackle it? Is there any way to adjust everyone? Are our cities capable enough to have them? Hell nope. Theoretically and technically both, we are not able to handle such influx of population in cities. Then how we will solve this problem?
And here the concept of a smart city comes. There is an emerging need for the cities to get smarter in India so that it would tackle the issues related to large scale urbanization. It means it can handle such a large volume of population with all required amenities.
So what is a smart city?
A smart city is a city which should be well equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life to its resident. A smart city will be developed to cater the influx of heavy population, which will be migrating in coming days.
How many smart cities will be developed?
Total 100 smart cities will be developed across the nation.
So what will be specialties of a smart city?
A smart city project will have lots of specialties’ which will make this city a different city from traditionally established cities. Let’s have a look at a few.
1-Resident participation-Unlike traditional cities where big builders decided how to develop the city, smart city will fully be developed with the suggestions of local residents, local authority and administration.
Here Property developers won’t decide how a city should grow else the decision about the development of the city will be taken by the resident. The participation of local residents in making their own city will definitely help to construct a better city, which will cater the need of the masses.
2–Good infrastructure –Of course, the smart cities are intended to provide better infrastructures to its residents like well-furnished road, sewage system, school, shopping complexes, clean and potable water, electricity, sanitation.
In smart cities, all required data about the required infrastructures will be collected and feed into the computers. Resident and administrators can track the current status and provide the required facility to its resident by analyzing the date status. This process will make these cities more efficient.
3–Housing for everyone–This is the most important aim to build a smart city.
The smart city will truly fulfill the theme of “housing for all”. These smart cities will provide a better standard of living. To support the heavy influx of population, a sustainable model of housing will be developed which will be affordable.
4–Smart solutions –These smart cities will be well equipped modern cities which will provide all the basic amenities at priority.
These cities will provide smart solutions to its residents like waste management, water quality monitoring, water recycling and proper health checkup with their active participation.
5-Promotes development – A Smart city will enhance the developmental activities of that region.
Just think about many development activities that would take place like building schools, organizations, shopping malls, roads. These activities will benefit everybody, including citizens, businesses persons and government.
6-Provides employment – A smart city is well intended to be capable of providing employments to its resident.
It will provide various opportunities and advantages to its residents. Construction of a smart city requires a lot of manpower. Emerging shopping malls and organizations will also create a huge chunk of employment.
So finally we can say that the model of a smart city is a global model which will reconstruct the fate of this country.
