1-Saudi Arabia severs diplomatic ties with Iran amid escalating tensions

Saudi Arabia announced to severe diplomatic relations with Iran following the execution of Shia cleric al-Nimr. Demonstrators stormed and set fire to the Saudi Embassy in Tehran in protest.

2-India wins South Asian Football Federation cup for 7th time

India beat Afghanistan for the 7th time in South Asian Football Federation Cup. With this win, India is likely to make a jump in FIFA rankings.

3-World Bank to finance Nai Manzil Scheme

Nai Manzil Education and Skills Training for Minorities youth was signed with the World Bank. Total project size is USD 100 million from which USD 50 million will be available as IDA credit and rest will be in funding from the Union Budget.

4-World Braille Day observed on his birthday

The world today observed ‘Braille Day’ to commemorate the 206th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the creator of Braille Code.

5-Tallest statue of Jesus Christ unveiled in Africa

Nigeria has launched a 9 meter tall statue of Jesus Christ carved from white marble and it is named Jesus de Greatest. The statue  is located in Abajah village in southeastern Nigeria.

6-Karnataka prisoners to have smart ID cards

Karnataka’s prison department has decided to issue digitised identity cards to prisoners and undertrials in all jails across the state. The card will have the prisoner’s name, age, barrack cell number, number of cases against the prisoner and details about the hearing.

7-Space mining market is worth over $100 trilion

Mining asteroids for metals could be worth over $100 trillion. It is being reported by space technology companies Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries. Both companies are launching multiple spacecraft to analyse asteroids and identify the most valuable mining prospects.

8-Charlie Hebdo releases anniversary edition cover

French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has unveiled the cover of the special edition which has a bearded man, carrying a Kalashnikov rifle as the backdrop reads “One year on: the assassin is still out there”. The cover will release on Wednesday when it completes a year since the terrorist attacks on its offices.

9-Justice RM Lodha Committee submitted its report

Justice RM Lodha Committee on IPL spot fixing on 4 January 2015 submitted its report to the Supreme Court. It has suggested reforms in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and also favoured legalising betting. The panel has recommended separate governing bodies for IPL and BCCI, with limited autonomy for the IPL Governing Council.

10-Union Government announced setting up of Central Coalfield Limited Sports University in Jharkhand

The centre has announced to set up of Central Coalfield Limited Sports University in Jharkhand. The university will have a capacity of 1400 students. The university will help the youth from the state to sharpen their skills under coaches of international standard.
